The best part of learning, is living.

L.A.B.S

Logic And Basic Skills

Individuals who have endured the enduring impacts of poverty have often formed persistent habits and perspectives that can only be transformed through the right blend of education, training, and personal determination.

L.A.B.S is an acronym representing Logic and Basic Skills. It serves as the foundational core of all Elite Academy Programs. At the heart of our educational philosophy lies the firm belief that comprehensive learning and independence are the keys to breaking the cycle of poverty. We are dedicated to equipping our children with the tools they need to achieve success through an approach that seamlessly blends practicality with the joy of youth, making knowledge both accessible and enjoyable.

Critical thinking skills are necessary for analyzing information, evaluating arguments, and making well-reasoned decisions. Without these skills, individuals may be more susceptible to manipulation, misinformation, and scams, which can negatively impact their financial situation and opportunities for advancement.

We provide families with the flexibility to choose from three distinct afterschool program packages, ensuring they can tailor their selection to match their specific needs, budget, and lifestyle. These options include:

  1. The “Elite Achievers” Package: This package offers two days of tutoring, specifically on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at a cost of $30 per week per child.

  2. The “Goal Getter Gang” Package: With this package, children can participate in two days of Essential Life Skills sessions, held on Mondays and Wednesdays, at a cost of $30 per week per child.

  3. The “Creme de la Creme” Package: Our most comprehensive offering, this package includes all five days of our afterschool program, from Monday to Friday, providing a well-rounded experience for children at a cost of $50 per week per child.

By offering these diverse packages, we aim to accommodate the unique preferences and needs of each family while ensuring they have access to the services that best align with their priorities and resources.

We maintain regular communication with parents and teachers on a quarterly basis to assess the academic progress and challenges faced by each child. In this process, we not only address areas of difficulty but also identify areas where the child has already achieved mastery at their current grade level.

When a child has demonstrated proficiency in a particular area, we take the initiative to introduce them to the next level of learning, typically taught in the following grade level. This approach proves to be exceptionally beneficial for children who may be performing at or below their grade level in specific subjects.

For instance, if a child has successfully mastered all kindergarten sight words, and the class curriculum focuses on kindergarten-level sight words, we provide the child with the opportunity to explore and learn 1st grade sight words, ensuring a continued challenge and growth in their educational journey.

As a standard practice, our afterschool program operates in accordance with the Bibb County BOE calendar. To maintain consistency, children are eligible to attend the program only if they have attended school on the same day.

Additionally, we observe a selection of holidays to respect and celebrate important moments throughout the year:

  • New Year’s Day – January 1st
  • Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. – Third Monday of January
  • Mental Health Day – Third Monday of February
  • Founders Day – April 5th
  • Memorial Day – Last Monday of May
  • Juneteenth – June 19th
  • Independence Day – July 4th
  • Labor Day – First Monday of September
  • Indigenous Peoples’ Day – Second Monday of October
  • Veterans Day – November 11th
  • Thanksgiving Day – Fourth Thursday of November
  • Christmas Eve – December 24th
  • Christmas Day – December 25th
  • Kwanzaa – December 26th-31st

These observances not only reflect our commitment to the community but also provide children with meaningful opportunities to engage with and learn about various cultural and historical events.”

Executive Functioning Skills refer to a set of cognitive processes that enable individuals to plan, organize, prioritize, initiate, and complete tasks. These skills also involve self-regulation, emotional control, working memory, flexibility, and goal-directed persistence. Essentially, they allow a person to manage their thoughts, actions, and emotions effectively, leading to better decision-making and problem-solving abilities.

When it comes to addressing generational poverty, executive functioning skills play a crucial role. Here’s how:

  1. Decision-making and Planning: Developing strong decision-making and planning skills helps individuals break the cycle of poverty by making informed choices about education, career, and finances. They can strategically plan their path towards economic stability.

  2. Problem-Solving Abilities: Enhanced problem-solving abilities allow individuals to navigate challenges associated with poverty more effectively. They can find viable solutions to improve their circumstances and create a better life for themselves and future generations.

  3. Financial Management: Proficient executive functioning skills assist in managing finances, budgeting, and saving. This is pivotal in escaping poverty, as individuals can make sound financial decisions and accumulate resources for education, investments, and emergencies.

  4. Education and Employment Opportunities: Improved cognitive control and organizational skills positively impact education and employment prospects. Individuals can focus on their studies, complete tasks efficiently, and maintain stable employment, ultimately leading to better opportunities and increased income.

  5. Interpersonal Relationships and Networking: Executive functioning skills contribute to developing strong interpersonal relationships and networking abilities. These connections can provide access to mentorship, guidance, and job opportunities that are instrumental in breaking the cycle of poverty.

In summary, honing executive functioning skills equips individuals with the necessary tools to overcome the challenges of generational poverty. By empowering individuals to make informed decisions, manage resources, excel in education and employment, and build a support network, executive functioning skills are a crucial factor in helping individuals and families rise above persistent socioeconomic limitations.

Knowledge of laws and governmental processes helps individuals navigate legal systems, understand their rights and responsibilities, and advocate for themselves. Without this knowledge, individuals may face barriers accessing resources, benefits, and opportunities that could help lift them out of poverty.
